Shot 9R.1  The vortex, down

NOT DRAWN YET. THE SECOND VORTEX, AND THIS ONE GOES DOWN. He arrived by rising; he leaves by falling, after Coach Brain has explained the theory and let the key go. Same throat, same strands of keys, same water, and the direction of travel reversed: his clothes and hair now pull UPWARD because he is going down, which is the only thing that tells the audience which way he is moving. Up on the way in, down on the way back, and that symmetry is the shape of the whole second half.

THE UP VORTEX TURNED 180 DEGREES. A stand in, not a drawing. It is here so the shape of the film can be seen end to end while the real descent is made. Rotating a spiral does reverse the sense of the turn, which is why it holds at all, but the cloud still thins toward what is now the bottom and it will read as upside down once anybody looks twice.
